What is it?

Vitamin B12, also known as cyanocobalamin or cobalamins, is referred to as a water-soluble vitamin that is considered vital for the proper bodily functioning of the brain as well as the nervous system. Its role is also crucial for the formation of red blood cells. Broadly speaking, Vitamin B12 is a member of the vitamin B-complex family that also consists of seven other vitamins such as Vitamin B1 (thiamine), Vitamin B2 (riboflavin), Vitamin B3 (niacin), Vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid), Vitamin B6 (pyridoxamine), Vitamin B7 (biotin), and Vitamin B9 (folic acid). Among the members of the Vitamin B family, B12 is perhaps the most complex vitamin in terms of its structure, as it contains some rare constituents such as cobalt.

Deficiency

A deficiency of Vitamin B12 may lead to several ailments and conditions. For instance, its inadequacy results in pernicious anemia – a condition in which cells become oversized and defectively shaped. There are also several other conditions and symptoms that are associated with a lack of Vitamin B12 such as:

  • dandruff,
  • depression
  • heart palpitations
  • memory problems
  • menstrual irregularities
  • paleness
  • sore tongue
  • weak pulse

Foods

Foods such as shrimps, scallops, egg yolk, liver, venison, beef, fermented plant foods, and certain types of yeasts including brewer’s yeast are considered some of the best sources of Vitamin B12. Vitamin B12 is also now available in the form of supplements and shots.

Safety

Vitamin B12 shots are mostly adopted to cope with persistent fatigue – a condition associated with the failure of the intestine to absorb vitamin b12 as a result of lack of an element in the stomach called Intrinsic Factor. They are also taken as relief for conditions such as Fibromyalgia and Autism. As per certain studies, a B12 shot can provide the body with immediate positive benefits, such as stress reduction, healthy skin, weight loss, boosting energy, and enhanced memory.

Although Vitamin B12 shots have been considered effective in many ways, it is strictly recommended to consult with your doctor prior to its usage. For instance, digestion process varies from person to person, and hence if the dosage is not adequate, it may sometimes cause hindrance to the bodily functions.

DO NOT try doing this without proper supervision by a medical professional.

Dr. Bernstein Diet uses B12 shots right?

Dr Bernstein is a Canadian-based doctor who has more than three decades’ experience in treating people who are overweight or obese. Apart from recommending a low calorie diet including such foods as:

  • celery
  • mushrooms
  • apples
  • lemons
  • bay leaves
  • veal cutlets
  • chicken liver
  • breasts
  • shrimp
  • tuna
  • decaffeinated coffee
  • and herbal teas

Dr Bernsteins’ diet program includes the administration of oral and injectable vitamins as well as mineral supplements in the form of Vitamin B6 and B12 shots. According to Dr Bernsteins, vitamin shots such as B12 shots serve as a fuel to burn fat and eventually lose weight. However, there are certain concerns regarding these shots and their long term effects on your body.

Benefits

Seen as an energy vitamin, Vitamin B12 shots are regarded as energy boosters due to their ability to aid metabolism and enhance energy levels. Perhaps for these reasons, B12 shots find a prominent position in many of the popular diet plans. Further, in contrast to B12 supplements that may take considerable time being absorbed by the body, a B12 shot is injected directly into the muscles, thereby enabling for smooth, easy absorption. Above all, these shots help to reduce cravings and counteract the feelings of fatigue and lethargy.

Can I buy vitamin B12 shots?

Vitamin B12 shots are over the counter products and hence can be purchased without any prescription. Even though many people use them without prescription for increased energy and to cure conditions like chronic fatigue, B12 shots may sometimes result in side effects including pain and infection at the shot area, sclerosis at the shot area, allergic reactions, and nerve damage. Therefore, as mentioned earlier, it is important to consult with a doctor before using.

MyFit Conclusion

Any weight loss that isn’t done through vegetables, protein and exercise is going to be hard to maintain in the long run.  It’s best that if you do try this method to also have a great succession pla to keep the weight off after you go off this type of injection.  While taking vitamin b12 as a multi-vitamin will not have the same effect we suggest you stick to a different diet plan such as the Abs Diet.

I have had monthly B12 shots for years. I am currently on an 8 week regimen of 1000 mcg/week then will return to 1000mcg/month. I have not lost a pound which leads me to believe that the weight loss B12 hype is just that: hype.

What happens when you stop it?  I mean, you’ve been on it for years so I’m assuming your body is use to this dosage… Who recommended that you stay on it for this long?
